A fair software-price comparison names the plan, includes introductory offers and separates software from professional services. It should also recognise banking-linked free subscriptions where the user qualifies. The cheapest headline is not enough to establish the complete cost or suitability.

Compare prices on the same basis

The following comparison uses public information checked on 10 September 2026. Prices exclude VAT and may change. Feature scope differs, so the figures are not a claim that the plans provide identical services.

Product or optionPrice basisTwelve-month software calculation
Avona entry-level self-service£15 per month£180 at that monthly rate
Xero Ignite, regular rate£18 per month£216 at that monthly rate
Xero Ignite, displayed introductory offer£1.80 for six months, then £18 for six months, if eligible£118.80 in that promotional first year
FreeAgentSelect the correct business type and billing option; eligible banking offers may provide the subscription freeUse the actual selected quote and any applicable add-ons
SageSelect the relevant current plan and offerUse the actual selected quote and required additions

Do not use a limited-company price as though it were FreeAgent's sole-trader quote, or invent a Sage figure where the selected plan has not been established. Confirm the offer terms and required features before relying on any price.

Worked comparison: regular and introductory pricing

At the stated regular monthly rates, Avona's £180 annual software cost is £36 below Xero Ignite's £216. Under the displayed eligible Xero introductory offer, Xero's first-year £118.80 is £61.20 below Avona's £180.

Both comparisons can be true because they cover different price conditions. A universal claim that every user saves £180–£300 would not follow from these figures.

Choose software by the work it needs to do

Start with your actual income sources and records. A sole trade, a UK property business and foreign property can involve different requirements. A product suitable for one set of circumstances is not automatically suitable for every annual-return item you might have.

HMRC's software guidance allows different approaches, including software connected to existing spreadsheets. Check the complete workflow: importing or recording transactions, reviewing the quarterly summary, submitting it, making corrections and completing the annual return.

Try a representative sample that includes a refund, a private transaction, a cash item and an awkward bank description. Ask how the system handles a missing period and how you export records if you leave. These questions are more informative than a long feature list.

Software support and professional tax advice are different services. Confirm who answers each kind of question, when help is available and what the quoted fee covers. Avona.app's entry-level self-service price is £15/month; professional services and additional product capabilities should be checked against the current scope rather than assumed to be included.

A review that checks more than the total

Start with coverage: the correct person, business and period, plus all relevant accounts and cash records. Then look at completeness. A feed can be connected today while still missing an earlier week. Confirm the earliest and latest transactions against the source.

Next, inspect unusual items. Large transfers, loan receipts, refunds, net settlements and private purchases often need more context than a bank description provides. Check for duplicate imports where a statement overlaps a live feed. An automatic warning is useful evidence to investigate, not proof that the entry must be removed.

Finally, review category totals. A category unexpectedly showing zero, a large increase or a negative amount deserves an explanation. You do not have to make every annual tax adjustment at this stage, but you should understand the records behind the summary you approve.

HMRC explains what quarterly updates contain. Keep the approved version and the resulting acknowledgement together. If something later changes, correct the source record and use the software's supported update process so you can explain which figures are current.

Treat a tax estimate as a forecast

A bookkeeping profit is not necessarily your final taxable income, and an estimated liability is not always the amount still to pay. Employment income, pensions, savings, reliefs, tax already deducted and payments on account can all affect the final position.

An estimate is most useful when you understand its coverage. Check whether it uses year-to-date figures or projects a full year, whether all income sources are included and whether adjustments are still outstanding. A strong summer followed by a quiet winter should not automatically be projected as twelve identical months.

HMRC explains that estimates after quarterly updates can be incomplete when other income is missing or accounting periods do not align with the tax year. Read the estimate guidance within quarterly reporting.

Use a reviewed forecast to inform a cash reserve, then compare it with actual HMRC liabilities and payment dates. If you transfer money into a tax savings account, that transfer is not a business expense. If an estimate changes sharply, investigate the records and assumptions before assuming that your tax position itself has changed by the same amount.

Add the costs your workflow actually needs

Check invoicing, VAT, bank connections, receipt handling, mileage, quarterly reporting and annual-return coverage. Add any required professional service, confirm renewal pricing and consider migration effort. Choose based on the complete workflow and your actual quote, including a banking-linked free option if eligible.

Take the next step

Avona.app offers a self-service route from £15/month. Bring your records together, review the figures and choose a workflow that fits your business. For professional help, discuss the scope and total price of Avona Concierge, managed by chartered accountants, before choosing a service.
