Need help? Our FAQ section covers the basics to guide your Avona experience smoothly.
What is MTD for ITSA and does it apply to me?
Making Tax Digital for Income Tax Self Assessment (MTD for ITSA) is an HMRC requirement for keeping digital records and submitting quarterly updates. You must join from 6 April 2026 if your gross qualifying income from self-employment and property was over £50,000 in the 2024/25 tax year. If your income is below this, you can still sign up voluntarily.
How is Avona different from standard accounting software?
Most accounting apps are built as financial cockpits for accountants, with jargon and complex dashboards. Avona focuses on absolute simplicity: connect your records, confirm your categories, and you’re done.
I have both a small business and a rental property. Can I use one account?
Yes. Avona identifies your income streams during onboarding and creates a separate ledger for each trade or property source, keeping the records clear while letting you manage everything from one account.
Do I still have to file a tax return on 31 January?
Yes, but the process changes. Instead of one annual scramble, you submit four quarterly updates throughout the year. Your quarterly data is then brought into a single Final Declaration due by 31 January.
Is my data safe with Avona?
Yes. Avona is an agent of Finexer Ltd (FCA Firm Reference Number 925695). We use bank-grade AES-256 encryption and host data on secure UK-based AWS servers.
I’m not an accountant. Will I understand the terminology?
That is exactly who Avona is designed for. We remove accounting jargon and present familiar tax categories in a simple, visual interface, so you do not need bookkeeping training to use it.
What is a digital link and why is it mandatory?
A digital link lets information flow electronically between the parts of your record-keeping process without manual retyping or copy-and-paste. Avona supports this through secure bank feeds and connected digital records.
What happens if I miss a quarterly deadline?
HMRC uses a points-based penalty system for late submissions. Avona keeps your deadlines visible and sends reminders so you can stay on top of each required update.
Do I have to pay my tax bill every three months now?
No. MTD for ITSA changes how you keep records and report income, not the normal payment schedule. Your usual Self Assessment payment deadlines still apply.
Why do I need to provide my National Insurance number?
Avona uses your National Insurance number to securely match your account with HMRC when you authorise the connection through Government Gateway. This lets Avona submit updates to HMRC on your behalf.
Can I try Avona before I commit to a subscription?
Yes. You can start with a free trial, connect your records, and see how Avona categorises your transactions before choosing a subscription.
What is the difference between Avona Lite and Avona Pro?
Avona Lite covers core MTD quarterly updates and simple bookkeeping. Avona Pro adds the full accounting engine, including customer invoicing, VAT returns, advanced reports, and year-end accounting tools.
Am I tied into a long-term contract?
No. Avona operates on a cancel-anytime basis, and you can manage your subscription through your customer portal.
What payment methods do you accept?
Payments are processed securely through Stripe. Avona accepts major credit and debit cards, including Visa, Mastercard, and American Express.
How do I cancel my subscription?
You can cancel from your Settings page at any time. Access continues until the end of your current billing period, and no further subscription charges will be taken.
What happens to my data if I cancel my account?
Your records are retained in line with applicable tax record-keeping requirements. You can export your digital records in an HMRC-friendly format before or after cancelling.
What if my bank connection expires?
Avona will let you know when your bank connection needs attention and guide you through reconnecting it, helping keep your digital records up to date.
Does Avona handle jointly owned properties?
Yes. If you own a property with a spouse or partner, Avona lets you record your individual share of the income and expenses so your personal figures stay accurate.
Does Avona replace my accountant?
Avona makes record-keeping and submissions simple enough to manage yourself, but it can also work alongside your accountant. You can grant them access to review your figures and help with your Final Declaration.
